The Best Games - Fireside Game Jam 2024
This year's gamejam theme was "Expand". Developers from all over the world joined in, creating games from all different genres. The game jam ran for 10 days, giving people lots of time to develop larger games they could be proud of. The jam was hosted on itch, and the results can be seen in this video.

Creating A Game In Under 72 Hours - Ludum Dare 55
Переглядів 9 тис.Місяць тому
Ludum Dare 55 was right around the corner. It's a game jam where, in the compo category of the jam, you have 48 hours to create a game. This includes all of the art and coding. It's a great way to flex your game making skills, and make a game for their unique theme. Even though we didn't realize we had 72 hours, we made a game anyway. 💖Spent Shells On Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/2653670/S...

Adding new mini-bosses to our roguelike game, as well as a bunch of other mechanics and tweaks to the game. In this devlog, I'll talk about the beginnings of the new boss fight room, the new direction we'll be taking in the development of our game, and the gamedev reason behind some of the choices we made. 💖Spent Shells On Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/2653670/Spent_Shells/ Patreon: www.pat...

Adding a chaos bar mechanic, as well as a new set of UI and upgrade icons for the roguelike game we're developing. In this devlog, I'll talk about the chaos bar game mechanic, and how it's designed to incentivize a specific kind of gameplay, while the UI changes are just meant to look pretty. The Hardest Game Jam I've Ever Done - Devlog
Переглядів 18 тис.8 місяців тому
This gamejam was like a series of unfortunate events, gamedev edition. Game development is always hard, but this game was rough. Between myself, the pixel artist, and the game musician we had major issues pop up all along the development of this game. This game was for VimJam4 an annual gamejam that happens once per year. 💖Patreon: www.patreon.com/helperwesley Links To Where I Hang Out: linktr....

"Indie devs, the Zombeez Game Jam on itch is a must. Participate today!"
I really want to play. what's the name?
You don't really need multiple companions for the turret. You can just add another version of loot. Like a chip you install and it just changes its attack style.
sir make a video about noise generation please please please please
Why is no one talking about how insane the Linen boss transition animation is? As a novice pixelartist it left me stunned at how good it looked
ive been trying to make a rouglike but i can barley figure out how to get things to work so i would appreciate it if you would make tutorials on how to add (example) dashing in top down and other stuff within this project
There's an example in the GDevelop engine called "conviction of gun dude" with the bare bones mechanics from my game. That might be worth picking through. 👍
Is there a tutorial for this? My sprite animation won't stop after the joystick is pressed. Help :(
You did great. I also partook in a jam recently, we managed to ship a game that got into the top 3.5% overall among over a thousand games. We got 39th place. Which is surprising considering how unpolished, buggy it was in the first builds, and how much of a disorganized mess our work was.... which totally did not make me panic as a pixel artist... not at all.. (Sadly I didn't get like top 2% in graphics, my pixel art isn't that good, but people seemed to like it enough...)
Nice! Congratz! 💪
@@HelperWesley Thanks..... (now if only this would help me feel confident into making the games I wanted to make lol.... self-esteem can be a jerk sometimes)
@@costelinha1867 Yeah... I know that feeling. 😅 Because of my job and this channel, I'm often comparing myself to some of the best people in those spaces, which isn't great for my self-esteem either. But I just keep doing it because it's kind of become a core part of me at this point, I'll never be the best, but this is what I do. 🤷♂ A lumberjack cuts wood, and a HelperWesley makes games and videos about making those games. 😅
damn that look so unique, i love it
Oh hey, i made it into the video ! :D
I love the art
for my own sake, i will not look up "spider nest"
Very wise decision. 😅
The style Is 🤤🤤🤤
For the sniper rifle I think a cool way to handle its mechanical difference is to either add a “charge” where you can hold attack and do more damage depending on how long you hold it, or be able to hold it and slow down time.
Dude, this is freakin' awesome. I've been binge watching development on your game (partly to avoid working on my own 🤣). I am a huge fan of your game, and most definitely love Art's art. It is so inspiring to see another developer be so awesome. Hope you do well, man. Good Luck!
I think maybe a cool way to add variety to your companion is by allowing you to change it's abilities. It could still be the same companion, but you're able to upgrade the drone every run just like the character. You could also have a system in which there are preset classes that changes how the drone works at the beginning of a run.
Finally some time to watch! EDIT: wooow, the quality of these games is amazing!
6.1k views in 5 days? WE UP WITH THIS ONE bit fr tho, your videos are actually really fun to watch
Cool satanist game
Ah I so wanted to join this jam but life got in the way 😅
Always happens, life stuff waits til there are cool jams, and then it all happens at once. Lol
GDevelop?
GDevelop?
@@HelperWesley - I always thought you were the GDevelop guy (yeah I know there are others). So I was asking if this was a jam specific to GDevelop. I didn't think I was being that obtuse.
@@Uhfgood Oh no, the fireside jam I host every year is open to all engines and tools. I love GDevelop, but game jams are exciting with any engines. 👍
Had a blast playing all of these myself! There were so many good entries that I'm kind of impressed that my game still managed to land in the top five. Wonder if I can do even better next year...
Theme : Expand My Mind : Domain Expansion !!! Infinite Void
This really makes me want to put in more hours next time, so many great games
you repeated "they said" so many times that i have to ask - you don't know each other or what is going on? it sounds so weird
Pronoun anxiety induced by the deranged culture we live in.
What was the theme of this game jam
Expand. 👍
Please comment helper Wesley
Please helper Wesley please add 3D shadow gdevelop because panda ko launch a 3D shadow extension please make a tutorial please please please please please please please please please😢😢😢😢
I'm thrilled that I joined this jam and had the chance to see some amazing games. Even though I didn't make it, I'm still proud of my work. Looking forward to next year! 😊
The other games were cool and all but i made it into top 20!! Woohoo
TEAM INFLAFROG FOREVER!
INFLAFROG SWEEP 🎉
Even if we didnt make it into the video im still really proud of the game my team made amd im looking forward to next year :)
jame gam
So true
So very jame
Very impressive how many minigames you added and fantastic art as always. Great job chaps!
How did you make text appear on screen???
When is your next spent shells devlog coming out?
Yes, the graphics is really good, your gfx artist is very talented. I cannot comment on the gameplay since I did not play the game.
ArtManOil is great. 💪
The takeaway is - pretty much anything can work for indies if they have a strong artist on the team.
It definitely helps. lol
The first enemies projectile attack doesn't match with its aesthetics. Maybe after smashing the grounds, rocks falling would be a better look. :)
2% is really good! Praise for oil man 🎉🎉
Congrats on your placement! I've always wanted to make a warioware type game, but my game ideas end up being too complicated and I lose interest. Your game inspired me to look into giving it another shot :)
Warioware was an ambitious choice. 😅 I like what we created, and the system we made where I could easily copy/paste existing minigames to add more to the game, that really helped when I was creating them all on the first night.
Mmm, yes, pancakes smothered in maple syrup. A true Canadian, you are.
